Back in April, on our first real hot day of the year, God used Riley to make me aware of how much I complain and to convict me to change. You see, Riley knows how to say "hot" and she loves signing "hot." She also loves to copy whatever I do.
So on this particular day, it was becoming increasingly hot in our house. At about 10 a.m. I said something like, "Oh I'm so hot!" and of course, Riley immediately copied me. The first time she did it I thought it was cute. But then by 11 a.m. (only about an hour later), I realized she had said it several times. And every time she had copied me! That's when God opened my eyes... He says very clearly in Philippians, "Do everything without complaining" (NIV), and yet, I had complained countless times about the heat and it was only April! On top of that, I was teaching my daughter to complain. Most of the things that Riley does/says are adorable, but hearing a one year old complain is definitely not cute at all.
So when Josh got home later that day, I told him I did not want to complain about the heat anymore and asked him to gently rebuke me if I did. Since he's gone most of the day, I'm very grateful that God has given me a precious little girl that likes to copy me all day, and thereby, keeps me accountable to these convictions. May I be thankful that God created the sun and gives us a season that's perfect for playing in the water all day!
